What is the Shared Reading Project?
For many years, we have known that reading aloud to children is THE key to
learning to read. Nevertheless, for many children who are deaf or hard of
hearing, the experience of being read to by a parent or teacher may be all too
rare. The most common reason they hesitate to read to deaf children is that they
are unsure of the best way to do it.
The
Shared
Reading Project pairs Deaf adult mentors with families that have deaf
children and provides them with children’s literature and accompanying sign
language videos. This also offers more opportunities for deaf and hard of
hearing children to interact with Deaf role models and adults who sign fluently.
